Privacy Policy

Life in the UK Test (the website at www.lifeintheuktutor.com and the iPhone app, together "the App") is operated by Capitalizt Ltd, 128 City Road, London, United Kingdom EC1V 2NX ("we", "us", "our"). We are the data controller for the information described here.
This policy explains what we collect, why, who helps us process it, and your rights.
Information we collect
- Account details: your first name and email address, and if you bought on the website, a reference to your purchase. We use these to sign you in, check what you have access to and save your progress.
- Sign in codes: when you ask for a code we store a scrambled (hashed) copy for 15 minutes so we can check it. Sessions are stored the same way.
- Settlement checklist (if you buy it): the route you choose, the dates you enter (such as when your visa started or your ILR was granted), the documents you tick and the trips abroad you add. They are saved with your progress so the checklist works on any device, and are used only to show you your checklist.
- Study progress: chapters read and completed, questions answered, scores, mock test results, topic mastery, streaks, achievements, your test date and daily goal. This lets you carry on where you left off on any device.
- Where you came from: when you sign up we note the advert or link that brought you (for example "google" or "email"), so we know which adverts work.
- Email preferences: whether you left the box ticked to receive study tips and reminders, when you signed up, and whether you have unsubscribed.
- English waiting list: if you join the waiting list for our English course, your email, and if you choose to give them, your first name, your settlement route and when you plan to apply, plus where you came from and when you joined.
- Messages to Amber: the questions you ask our AI tutor and the replies.
- Technical data: like any website, our hosting provider records basic request logs (such as IP address and browser type) to keep the service secure and working.
We never see or store your card details. Payments are handled by Stripe, Apple, or for earlier purchases Gumroad.
How we use it, and our lawful basis
- To provide the App (signing you in, saving progress, emailing sign in codes, Amber): this is necessary to provide the service you asked for.
- Study tips and reminders by email: when you sign up to try the App, the box to receive these is ticked, and you can untick it before you continue. We only email you about the App itself. This is based on our legitimate interest in helping you prepare for the test, as allowed for people who have shown an interest in our product. You can stop these emails at any time with the unsubscribe link in every email or by replying to one. Unticking or unsubscribing does not affect your use of the App.
- English waiting list emails: based on your consent when you tick the box to join. We only email you about the English course, and you can leave the list at any time with the link in our emails or by replying to one.
- Measuring our adverts: on the website we use Google's advertising tag in consent mode. Until you click Accept, it sets no cookies and sends Google only basic, cookieless signals (such as the page and whether you came from an advert). If you click Accept, it also tells Google Ads that a sign up or purchase happened, using a scrambled ID rather than your email. If you accepted and came from a Google advert, we also keep that advert's click reference with your account, and send it back to Google Ads with the date of your sign up or purchase, so we can see which adverts work. If you accepted, we also send Google a scrambled (hashed) copy of your email address when you sign up or buy. Google uses it only to match your sign up or purchase to the advert you clicked, under Google's enhanced conversions terms. We never send Google your name, and we never sell your information. This applies to people who accepted on or after 1 November 2026. If you choose No thanks, no advertising cookies are set and nothing about your email is sent to Google.
- Counting visits: on the website we use Vercel Web Analytics to count page visits, which pages are viewed, which buttons are pressed (such as Try or Unlock) and roughly where visitors come from (country, device and referring site). It sets no cookies and does not identify you; visits are counted anonymously. We use it, based on our legitimate interest, to understand how the website is used and improve it.
- Keeping the service secure: limits on code requests and similar protections, based on our legitimate interest in preventing misuse.
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use it for any other purpose.
Deleting your account
You can delete your account at any time in the app: Settings, then Delete my account. This removes your sign in, your saved progress and your sign up record. We keep a record of any purchase linked to your email, because we need it for our accounts and so that signing in again with that email restores what you paid for. You can also email hello@capitalizt.com to ask us to delete everything.
Who helps us run the App
These providers process data on our behalf, only to run the App:
- Supabase: our database, with servers in the European Union.
- Vercel: hosts the website and our servers, and counts website visits anonymously.
- Resend: sends our emails (sign in codes and, unless you opted out, study tips and reminders).
- Stripe: takes card payments on the website and tells us who has bought.
- Gumroad: handled a small number of website purchases before 28 October 2026. We no longer use it, and those buyers now sign in with an email code.
- Apple: sells the iPhone app and its in-app unlock through the App Store. When you unlock in the iPhone app, Apple gives the app a signed record of the purchase, which we check and link to your email so your access also works on the website. We never see your card details.
- An AI service provider: generates Amber's replies. Your question, the conversation so far and your first name and a short summary of your study progress are sent to produce each reply. Your email address is not sent.
- Google: advert measurement, only if you accept cookies, including the scrambled copy of your email described above.
Some of these providers may process data outside the UK. Where they do, they are bound by appropriate safeguards such as the UK International Data Transfer Addendum or Standard Contractual Clauses.
How long we keep it
We keep your account and progress while you use the App. Sign in codes expire after 15 minutes. If you ask us to delete your data, we will remove it within 30 days. If you unsubscribe, we keep a note of that so we do not email you again.
Your device
The App stores a copy of your progress and your sign in on your own device (browser storage) so it works quickly and offline. The cookie bar choice is stored there too.
Children
The App is designed for adults preparing for the Life in the UK test. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 13. If you believe a child has given us their details, contact us and we will delete them.
Your rights
You can ask to see, correct or delete your data, object to how we use it, or ask for a copy. Email hello@capitalizt.com. You can stop marketing emails at any time with the unsubscribe link. If you are unhappy with how we handle your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
Changes
If we change this policy we will update the date at the top, and tell you by email if the change is significant.
