Coming soon · English for settlement
Get ready for the new B2 English test for settlement.
From 26 March 2027, most people applying to settle in the UK need English at B2 for speaking and listening, up from B1. That is a big step, roughly from GCSE to A level standard. We are building a course to get you there, from the team behind the Life in the UK Test app.

Questions
Does the new rule apply to me?
It covers most settlement routes, including work routes, partners and long residence, and partners and adult children applying with you. BN(O) applicants keep B1. People from majority English speaking countries, people with a degree taught in English and people aged 65 or over usually do not need a test. Check GOV.UK for your route.
What if I apply before 26 March 2027?
Settlement applications made before that date need B1, as now.
Does citizenship need B2?
The announced change is for settlement. Citizenship stays at B1 as things stand.
When will the course open?
We will email everyone on the waiting list as soon as it opens.
